High School and Middle School Scholarships

Our scholarship program is available to all middle and high school students. 

  • A high school educator may submit an application for a scholarship on  behalf of a student who has financial need or shows academic achievement.
  • You must be an educator registered with your school or organization. If you do not already have a "Net ID" (which is our term for an account), please create a Net ID.
  • Schools will need one previous enrollment with BYU Independent Study in the past twelve months to be eligible to apply for a course scholarship for a student.
  • Please do not have the student enroll in the course until the scholarship has been awarded. Scholarship funds cannot be applied retroactively to a course that a student has already paid for.

We know each student’s situation is unique, so tell us why you are recommending your student to receive a scholarship.

Apply for a scholarship  *Note: Only Educators can apply for scholarships for students

Submit a scholarship as an educator for a student by following these steps:

1. Information needed to complete the application form:

  • The course title and version that the scholarship will be applied to. For a full list of courses, visit the Course Catalog
  • Student Net ID: the student can create a BYU Net ID by selecting the login button at the top of this website
  • Both the student and educator Net IDs must be connected to the same school.  Enter your “Academic Institution" to connect.
  • Student's full name
  • Correct email address for student 
  • Student's GPA
  • Student's financial need level (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest)
  • Guidance educator's recommendation

2. How to fill out the application form:

  • Select the “Apply for Scholarship” button
  • Begin typing the student’s name in the Student field. A drop-down list will then appear. Find the student for whom you would like to request the scholarship and select their name
  • Click on the "Request Scholarship" tab
  • Once the application has been electronically submitted, it will be evaluated by a scholarship committee that reviews applications on a weekly basis. Both the educator and student will receive an email notifying them of the scholarship decision and the amount awarded

Will the scholarship cover the full cost of the course?

We have found when there is a financial obligation associated with a course, students tend to not only complete the course, but they also put forth more effort, perform higher academically, and obtain more parental involvement. Guidance educators can recommend scholarship amounts based on student circumstances. We suggest students pay a portion whenever possible.

Financial Aid

BYU Independent Study does not accept Federal Financial Aid. However, you are encouraged to apply for one of our scholarships, which are awarded every month.

BYU Independent Study delivers a flexible alternative for students by offering open enrollment, self-paced, year-long courses resulting in credit that can be transferred to many institutions. Because of this unique format, we are unable to declare full or part-time student enrollment status and attendance. As a result, we are unable to sign any for the following:

  • Consortium Agreements
  • Student Loan Deferment Forms
  • FAFSA Form
  • State Verification of Enrollment and Attendance Forms (including for driver’s license applications)
  • Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Nonmigrant Student Status
  • Social Security Administration Forms (requesting enrollment and class attendance information)
  • Any other form requiring declaration of part or full-time student enrollment status or attendance
